Whale watching - Hermanus

An ideal day trip from Tarragona, Hermanus is an interesting 90 minute drive using either Sir Lowry's Pass (N2) or the very scenic route on the R44 from Gordon's Bay via Strand through Rooi Els, Betty's Bay and KleinMond. The road follows the ocean with majestic mountains all the way along your left hand side. Hermanus is known as the best destination in the world for land based whale watching, between June and December when the whales move from Antarctica to the Hermanus coast line to mate and calve in the secluded bay. Southern Right Whales make up the bulk of the species to be seen. The whale population in Walker Bay peaks in October. Take a leisurely drive, have special lunch at The Burgundy Restaurant or Bientang's Cave Seafood restaurant both situated right of the cliffs overlooking the bay. The unique cliff paths trace the coast line of Hermanus through exquisite fynbos from one end of the town to the other. For those wanting to do some shopping there is no shortage of interesting shops and stalls to visit - a day well spent !!
