Bain's Kloof Pass

A lovely day trip from Tarragona. The N1 from Cape Town towards Worcester, the Ceres (R43) turn off to your left. Turn left on to the R303 - this will take you to Wellington, Wolseley and Ceres via Bain' s Kloof pass. Bain's Kloof pass crosses the Limietberge and was opened in 1853. It was a very complex undertaking and regarded as Andrew Geddes Bain's best a famous road builder and geologist. The 30 kilometer pass took four and a half years to complete and is unchanged a century and a half later. This pass was the main link with the hinterland until Du Toits Kloof pass was opened in 1949.
