Events leading up to the Urban Run

The 2011 Urban Run event had its start and finish at the Donkin Reserve on Sunday Morning. According to the organisers the main purpose of the race is to have fun. Even so competitiveness was evident just after 08h00 when eager athletes took on road to experience their first of a series of manmade obstacles to challenge the fitness of the runners.

The Urban Run makes even more sense when seen within the perspective of the aims of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). If Port Elizabeth is to bounce back from the effects of urban decay,

people doing good stuff needs to be lured back in to the inner city. And the Urban Run is doing just that. The beneficiary of the 2011 Urban Run is the “Coega Door of Hope”. The proceeds will go to the funding of school fees for kids from this home. The participants in the Urban Run will each raise at least R100, over and above the entry fee required to participate in the race.
